Eighth Meal [Video]

[Given some of the reactions that this topic has gotten from other people, it's surprising that Goku didn't bring it up earlier. Then again, he's considered it the norm for years now, so he doesn't see anything odd about it. Still, it came to mind recently, so he figures he should ask about it now rather than wait and forget again.]

Back home, we've got these things called the Dragon Balls. They're these seven magic balls - dunno what they're made of, but they're really tough! - that summon a dragon when they're all brought together! When he shows up, the dragon'll grant pretty much any wish that someone asks him, then he'll go away for a year and the balls can't be used to summon him during that time.

What I was wondering was... does anybody have something like that in their world? Or at least something that grants wishes. I heard there's a pokey man [That is to say, a Pokemon - he'll probably never get that right.] that can do that, but I haven't heard of anything else, which is kinda weird.

...Oh, an' for those who don't, I've got a question - if you could wish for one thing once you make it back home, what'd it be? [He doesn't want anyone to feel left out, after all.]

That sounds really amazing! My world doesn't have any balls that are magical like that. There are just a lot of spirits. But they might be able to grant some wishes if you ask the right ones really really nicely!

If I could make a wish? I guess it'd be that my people could still be around.

Really? That's neat! The ghosts in my world don't do anything like that! [He's figuring ghosts and spirits pretty much mean the same thing.]

...What happened to 'em? [He's a bit hesitant to ask - he didn't remember a thing about the near-extinction of his people, and Vegeta doesn't seem to care about it by this point, but he's worried that it could bring up some bad memories. Still, he can't help but express his curiosity.]

[Oh, wait, he sees it now - he looks a lot like Krillin! That must've been it.]

Pretty much! The only big things are that you can't bring back people who died from diseases an' stuff like that, and you can't kill someone stronger than the guy who made the Dragon Balls. [It's unfortunate that, by the time they found out about that rule, everyone was stronger than that, but Goku wouldn't have done that anyway - it wouldn't feel right to beat someone that way.]

[Goku laughs.] Yeah, that's what I thought too! I don't think they're actually his balls though. [Then again, he's never thought to ask.]

Mom told me a story about the Pokémon once! I don't remember the details that well but apparently it's only awake for a few days every thousand years. You can only get your wish granted during those days.

That's... definitely a lot trickier than the Dragon Balls, that's for sure. Has anybody ever found it?

[Loki has to think about that. There probably would be some spell that could grant wishes somewhere back home. Or maybe a creature or spirit that would. There probably would be quite a fee to pay, though. And pokey man...oh...wait didn't Ikki talk about such a thing before? Weren't they more partners-creatures instead of wish-granting-ones?

And then there was the subject of this man's hair. It seems to be out of control.

He taps his chin.]

I believe you mean poke mon? They are creatures that are created to be another man's friend and partner. And it involves training. But I am not sure about their ability to grant wishes.

[He raises a finger, eyebrows raising because he's going to share a most witty comment. Behold!]

My wish is rather complicated but I can guess your wish! You must hold a great desire to be able to control your hair.

Are you sure? This dragon guy said one of 'em could do that. Then again, I don't know much about 'em.

Nope! I like my hair the way it is. [Wit is wasted on the stupid.] Dunno what I'd wish for, though - usually it's just bringing people back to life. ...Maybe an endless supply of food!

That one's easy. I'd wish for so much money that I'd never have to worry about running out ever again. [nodnod. With that much money it'd be possible to move the orphanage out of the boonies too!]

...Wait, can I just wish for more wishes instead?

That's a good one! I'd wish for something similar, but with food. [Given how much his family spends on their groceries, it'd pretty much be the same thing.]

...I never thought of that, but probably not. The dragon gets pretty tired after granting the wishes - that's probably why he doesn't come back for a year!

There was something in my world that could grant wishes. It was called the Everlight.

I think I know that story! It's about a Pokémon from space. But I think it only comes down once a century, or maybe a lot longer than that.

If I were to make a wish back home... I'd wish for the whole world to have Subway lines! So that anyone could go anywhere, and enjoy a ride on a train.

I'd wish for the moon to stop falling, if such an item existed in my world. Or perhaps for the world's safety, to prevent future disasters of that kind.

What is the value of something you get through wishes and not through hard work?

I dunno - my friends and I usually use the wishes to bring people back from the dead, and I don't think that can be done with hard work. Maybe if I bug Enma enough... [Still, he knows the importance of hard work - that's why he doesn't wish for immortality, or to become the strongest fighter in the universe, or something like that.]

Yeah, there's been a few times where we had to stop 'em from falling into the wrong hands. My friend's really smart, though - she made a radar to keep track of 'em!
